Landon

A Congenital Heart Defect Warrior

Landon was born full term via C-section. After his 24-hour newborn screening, he was immediately given an echocardiogram due to failing his oxygen test. During the echo, it was discovered that he was born with multiple congenital heart defects.

Within an hour, he was life flighted to Duke Children’s and placed in the PCICU. Upon arrival, he was diagnosed with Double Inlet Left Ventricle and Transposition of the Great Arteries. At just 5 days old, Landon underwent the Norwood procedure.

The night after surgery, Landon went into cardiac arrest. His surgeon rushed to the hospital, performed hand compressions on his heart, and the team placed him on ECMO. While on ECMO, Landon suffered a stroke as well.

After a few months in the hospital, Landon was finally able to come home.

At four months old, during a routine cath procedure, doctors discovered he was in second-degree heart block. He underwent his second open-heart surgery—the Glenn procedure—and had a pacemaker placed. After two weeks in the hospital, he was released to go home.

At age 3, Landon had his third open-heart surgery—the Fontan. He did exceptionally well and was sent home after just one week.

Landon has done amazing since his last surgery. He is now almost 5 and the most active kid ever. He loves everyone he meets and makes friends everywhere he goes. He is the happiest kid and absolutely loves life. His smile never leaves his face.
