A Hydrocephalus Warrior

Alyciana was born an identical twin at just 23 weeks gestation in May 2022—more than three months before her due date of August 29th. Tragically, her twin sister passed away at just 24 days old.

Alyciana spent six long months in the NICU, and it wasn’t until she was five months old that she was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. She came home shortly after her first shunt placement surgery in late October 2022.

Since then, she has faced more than her fair share of challenges, including a dozen shunt revisions due to complications. In November 2023, she endured a month-long hospitalization, where she was intubated for pneumonia related to chronic lung disease and weak lungs. She also has a G-tube to support her with feeding and hydration.

Despite everything she’s been through, Alyciana is the happiest little girl I know. Her smile lights up every room, and her strength is nothing short of inspiring. She hasn’t needed surgery since 2023, and I feel incredibly lucky and honored to be her mama.
