Sydney
A Failure to Thrive Warrior
Sydney was born full term via induction, and everything seemed fine at first. It wasn’t until after we were discharged from the hospital that we noticed something was wrong. She wouldn’t eat. She wouldn’t nurse or take any bottle we tried.
I took her to the doctor numerous times and even saw a lactation consultant, but nothing helped. I felt helpless and like a failure as a mother.
By the time she was 2 months old, she wasn’t gaining any weight. We took her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with failure to thrive and a feeding aversion.
To this day, at almost 5 years old, she still has the feeding tube she received at 6 months old. She had an NG tube for 4 months before receiving her G-tube at 6 months.
We still don’t have answers for why she wouldn’t eat, and still doesn’t. But thanks to her feeding tube, Sydney is thriving. She is smart, spunky, and deeply loved.
We continue working with her doctors and therapists, and we hope that one day she won’t need the tube anymore. Until then, we are so grateful for the modern medicine that saved our daughter’s life.
