Logan

A Heterotaxy Syndrome Warrior

Hetero = different
Taxy = arrangement

Heterotaxy Syndrome affects 1 in 10,000 people each year. Every individual diagnosed with heterotaxy is unique, from the combination of defects to their severity.

For Logan, the most commonly affected organs — liver, heart, lungs, stomach, spleen, and intestines — are all impacted.

Logan has abdominal situs inversus, meaning her abdominal organs are arranged in a mirrored pattern. Her liver is located in the center of her body (midline liver), and her stomach is on the right side instead of the left.

She also has malrotation of the intestines, which increases her risk of intestinal twisting. This can lead to obstruction and vascular damage.

Logan was born with multiple congenital heart defects, making her overall diagnosis "complex cardiac defects." Her heart conditions include:

  • Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (PAPVR)

  • Transitional Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD)

  • Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)

  • Bilateral Superior Vena Cavae

  • Interrupted Inferior Vena Cava with Azygos Continuation to the Coronary Sinus

At just 3 months old, Logan had open-heart surgery. She is so proud of her scar, and we are so proud of her.

Her lungs are also affected. She has bilateral bilobed lungs, meaning both lungs have only two lobes instead of the typical two on the left and three on the right.

Logan has multiple spleens (polysplenia), but they do not function fully. She is considered to have functional asplenia and takes prophylactic antibiotics twice daily to help reduce her risk of infection since she is immunocompromised.

Despite everything, Logan continues to shine with incredible strength and courage. Every organ tells a story. Every scar is proof of her fight.
