A Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy Warrior

Kayliana was conceived via IVF. She was delivered via C-section at 36 weeks due to concerning fetal heart rate and growth restriction. She was rushed to the NICU immediately after birth because she wasn’t breathing.

The neurologist ordered genetic testing when she was a week old. At 6 weeks, we got the news that she had tested positive for Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy.

She was intubated for over 2 months. When she was finally able to come off the ventilator, she still couldn’t feed on her own. We had an H-button placed, and she was able to come home after 107 days.

The doctors told us she might never laugh or smile. They said she wouldn’t be able to roll over or sit up.

Today, she is practicing standing and walking with a walker. She laughs and smiles daily. She is a warrior, and the doctors are amazed at her progress.
