An HIE Warrior

Meet Gabriel, my brave firstborn. Despite a challenging beginning, God’s grace and Gabriel’s incredible resilience have carried him through. Though my pregnancy was smooth, his delivery was complicated by unexpected medical challenges. Gabriel experienced HIE, or hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, a form of brain injury caused by too little oxygen and blood flow to the brain around the time of birth. He required resuscitation, intubation, and 72 hours of cooling to help protect his brain and limit further injury. Doctors still do not know what lasting effects HIE might have on his development or future. We live everyday in the moment and today he is thriving, full of energy, and absolutely loves sports, fearlessly competing, constantly moving, and embracing every opportunity to be active!
